Last Friday night, Dave and I began our second season of shooting the Fayetteville Race Series, covering the "Splash & Dash Aquathlon", put on by the Fayetteville's Parks and Rec. department. It's a kid's only event, involving swimming a set number of laps and then running either a half mile or a mile, depending on your age. It's a lot of fun to photograph and the organizers and volunteers are great to work with. The participants range from age 7 all the way up to 18, and some of those kids are really, really fast runners. Everyone gets a certificate and trophies are awarded to the top three finishers in each age division.
This year's race began on a very muggy and hot August evening, which made the cool waters of the city's swimming pool even more beckoning, and I'm sure the kids who got to swim were relishing the relief. Heck, I was ready to jump in myself! The race kicked off at 6:00 p.m. and finished at 8:00 p.m. with the awards ceremony and a post-race party in the pool. With Fayetteville schools set to begin on Wednesday this week, this was a great race to wind up summer break and to shout a final "hurrah!" for summer.
Next up: the Square-to-Square Bike Ride. Stay tuned!
